Description

This course examines the composition of various substances and the changes they can go through.  It also shows how chemistry touches the lives of people in their everyday lives, in medicine, the clothes we wear, the games we play, as well as the industries that make the things we use.  The periodic table and simple compounds are covered as well as the basics of chemistry.

Objectives

Including, but not limited to:

1.  Use careful observations and exploratory activities to identify variables and to develop problem statements.
2. Describe how discoveries made by chemists can have both beneficial and detrimental affects on the quality of human life.
3.  Investigate the chemistry of air pollution for phenomena such as acid rain, ozone depletion, and global warming.
4.  Identify the principal types of chemical bonds (ionic, covalent, metallic) and intermolecular forces, how they are formed and examples of substances that contain these bonds.
5.  Using a balanced chemical equation, explain the law of conservation of matter.
6.  Distinguish between strength and concentration of acids and bases based on laboratory experiences such as pH or conductivity.
7.  Define oxidation, reduction, oxidizing agent, reducing agent, oxidation number, and half reaction and apply these definitions to selected reactions.
8.  Describe the effects of temperature, concentration and surface area on the rate of reaction.
9.  Investigate freezing point depression and boiling point elevation as they relate to common solutions such as antifreeze.
10. Write conclusions that cover the following seven points: state what was investigated; describe whether or not the hypothesis was supported by the results; include sample results; compare the results with other investigations; provide possible explanations about the results; recommend additional studies; and discuss possible applications.
